Social and emotional learning (SEL) is crucial for fostering a supportive learning environment. It empowers students to understand and manage emotions, set positive goals, and develop empathy.
Why social/emotional learning matters
Our resources are designed to support educators in integrating SEL practices into their teaching methodologies.
Social/Emotional Milestones
- Begins to identify and express emotions using words.
- Develops friendships and enjoys cooperative play.
- Learns to share and take turns with support.
- Shows empathy and concern for others.
- Builds confidence by completing simple tasks independently.
Two Classroom Social-Emotional Learning Activities
- Feelings Check-In
- Children choose a picture or emotion card that matches how they feel and discuss why they chose it.
- Helps build emotional awareness and communication.
- Role-Playing Social Situations
- Children practice sharing, taking turns, solving conflicts, and showing kindness through pretend play.
- Strengthens empathy and problem-solving skills.
Self-Regulation
Definition: Self-regulation is the ability to recognize and manage emotions, behaviors, and reactions appropriately in different situations.
Examples:
- Taking deep breaths when upset.
- Waiting patiently for a turn.
- Using words instead of hitting when frustrated.
How Teachers Can Encourage Self-Regulation
- Model calm behavior and talk through their own emotions (“I’m feeling frustrated, so I’m going to take a deep breath.”).
- Create a calming corner with sensory tools, books, and breathing visuals.
- Teach and practice breathing exercises, counting to ten, or mindfulness throughout the day.
Family Strategies for Home
- Read books about emotions and discuss how characters feel.
- Practice naming feelings during everyday routines.
- Create consistent daily routines to help children feel secure.
- Encourage taking turns during games and family activities.
- Praise children when they use calming strategies or solve problems appropriately.
Empowering educators and students
Our mission is to equip teachers with the tools they need to make emotional learning a core part of education.
